"هذا كتاب مهم لكاتب موهوب وشجاع. أهمية الكتاب تتجاوز ما يدل عليه عنوانه. فالعنوان يوحي بأن الكتاب يحتوي على نقد للنظام الرأسمالي، ويكشف عن خطأ الكثير من الأفكار الشائعة التي تُقدَّم لتبرير هذا النظام. نعم، نجد هذا في الكتاب، ولكننا نجد أيضًا أشياء أخرى كثيرة لا تقل أهمية، وربما كانت أكثر جدَّة وأكثر تحديًا للأفكار السائدة. الكتاب مثلًا يثير شكوكًا وجيهة للغاية في الدور الذي يلعبه التعليم في تحقيق التقدم الاقتصادي (وبدا أنه يشكك في أهميته لأهداف أخرى)، بل ويشكك في أهمية الاقتصاديين أنفسهم لتحقيق هذا التقدم، وفي الزعم بأن الناس في البلدان الفقيرة أقل استعدادًا للمخاطرة وتجريب الجديد، والزعم بأن هذا هو سبب فقرهم، إلخ. وفي نقده للأفكار الشائعة المدافعة عن الرأسمالية، لا يكتفي المؤلف بالتدليل على الدور المهم الذي لعبه تدخل الدولة في تحقيق التقدم الاقتصادي السريع في عديد من الدول، بل ويشكك في بعض المسلَّمات الشائعة، مثل أن الفرد يعرف دائمًا ما يحقق مصلحته، أو أنه دائمًا أكثر ذكاءً من الدولة في اختيار أفضل الطرق للتقدم، أو أن نظام التخطيط قد ظهر ضرره ومن ثَمَّ تم هجره، إلخ. إلى جانب الموهبة التي أهلت الكاتب للشك في صحة مثل هذه المسلَّمات، فإنه وجد أيضًا الشجاعة لمصارحتنا بشكوكه، كما أنه نقل ذلك بسلاسة ووضوح وظرف نادرًا أن تتوفر كلها لكاتب واحد. ومن حُسن حظنا أن قام بترجمته إلى العربية مترجم على هذا القدر العالي من الكفاءة والذكاء. كتاب أنصح بشدة بقراءته، من المتخصصين وغير المتخصصين في علم الاقتصاد، وأعتقد أن نفعه سيتجاوز بكثير أثره المباشر في رصد بعض الأخطاء الشائعة المتعلقة بمزايا حرية السوق." د. جلال أمين

This book seems to be intended to be very easy to read -which is good to some extent- but unfortunately it has made the discussion a bit too oversimplified. Ha-Joon Chang starts every chapter with a brief explanation on 'myths' he claimed put forward by the capitalists and free market advocates.
